The Roles of a Rotary Table in a Hydraulic Workover Unit and Drilling Process

There is a rotary table in a set of Hydraulic workover units. The officers should understand what it is and how it works to ensure that the HWO unit works maximally. The following information explains this part. Oil companies may finally understand why a hydraulic workover unit is more effective than conventional units even only after learning the rotary table.

What a Rotary Table Is

A rotary table is a mechanical device. It is often found on a drilling rig, especially if the companies use a hydraulic workover unit in the process. Just like its name, this tool is rotating clockwise to force the drill string. Once the rotary table rotates and pushes the drill string, the drilling process to create a borehole begins.

The Rotary Table Components

This tool consists of several components. The components ensure that the tool works maximally to support the HWO unit.

A Chain

A chain is one of the crucial components. It works to drive the table. The design looks like a bicycle chain but in a very large size. Users should apply oil regularly to this chain to keep it working maximally. Oiling the chain can also prevent serious issues, including burning and seizing.

A Rotary Lock

Just like its name, the main function of a rotary lock is to lock the rotary. It is crucial to prevent the rotary from turning in one direction only or even turning in all directions. Officers often mix it with tongs to make up or break out pipes.

Rotary Bushing

There are rotary bushings at the center of the rotary table. It is a customizable component because officers can separate it into two pieces. Oil company officers often do it for large items, such as drill bits. It helps to ensure that the items can pass through the rotary table.

An Example of Rotary Table Specification

Officers should check the rotary table specification first before using it in the milling process. For example, an oil company is using an HWU460K Hydraulic Workover Rig. In this case, the company is about to use a rotary table with up to 22.000 ft-lb torque.

This tool often has around 80 to 100 RPM minimum, along with CW and ACW locking devices. The provider will provide a rotary table with a 4-motor and 14-1.2 inches borehole. Due to its specification, the dimension of this tool is 1.6M x 1.60M x 0.3M. The weight of this tool is approximately 1.2MT.

Rotary Table Drilling

A rotary table drilling is a borehole process for deep observation. It is also used to obtain a specific sample in a certain area. The process involves a powerful rotary cutting head at the end of a shaft. It helps to drive the tool to rate into the ground. Lubrication is one of the most crucial processes in this drilling. Officers should lubricate the tools to keep the cutting head cool.

Types of Rotary Boring

Oil companies often use two different rotary boring techniques, which are open-hole and core drilling. The open-hole rotary borehole process involves lubricant. Companies often use open-hole boring for fast drilling speed to achieve the targeted depth immediately.

It is also suitable for the installation of monitoring wells. The core drilling technique involves several components, such as wire-line, double or triple-tube core barrels, and tungsten-tipped core bits. In the process, the wire-line core barrels will rotate from the surface.

The process will bring the core to the surface. Officers use this technique if they have to minimize vibration during the process. It is so crucial if officers have to drill in a weak area.

The Use of Double-Tube and Triple-Core Barrels

The rotary table drilling also uses double-core and triple-core barrels. So, what is the function of these barrels? Just like its name, the double-tube core has two barrels, which are outer and inner barrels. The outer barrel rotates with the help of the drill rods.

The core will move to the surface once the outer barrel rotates. In contrast, the inner barrel doesn’t rotate. The function of this barrel is to ensure that the core moves to the surface. The core will pass through the inner barrel when moving to the surface.

Just like the inner barrel, the triple-core barrels also don’t rotate. These barrels have a removable tube or liner. The function of the triple core barrels is also different compared to the second core barrels. Instead of forcing the core to move to the surface, the triple-core barrels keep the core in its condition during the moving to the surface.

The explanation above shows that the rotary table has an important role in a hydraulic workover unit and its milling or drilling process. This tool helps to create a hole whether to create a path or take a sample. Officers also understand that they have to lubricate the rotary table to keep it working well and prevent the cold condition.
